Weekend in Cape Town

We couldn't spend a whole summer in South Africa and not go to Cape Town! Unfortunately we were only able to spend a short weekend in the beautiful city. Here is what we did...

1. Lived in the Breakwater Lodge. The building used to be a prison that was later converted into a business school/hotel. It was the weekend so we didn't see any students (thankfully). The rooms however were really nice. I slept on the very comfortable sleeper sofa.

2. We hiked Table Mountain. It was really windy, and cold (at some points I thought I was going to get blown off the mountain...don't worry, I am in one piece). I have done so much hiking on this trip than I have in my entire life. I am basically ready to tackle Everest. The view from the top was amazing. You can see the entire city below.

3. We toured Robben Island, the prison many (including Nelson Mandela) political prisoners stayed during the struggle. We thought the tour would be canceled because of the wind and choppy waters but it wasn't (it probably should have been...my stomach was not too happy on the ride back).

4. We went to Cape Point (in the Cape of Good Hope National Park), where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Indian Ocean. We drove through many smaller villages and suburbs that were so nice. I wish we had more time to stop and go inside some of the stores. We also saw penguins (in South Africa!), had fish and chips, and amazing Indian food. Unfortunately my camera likes to die at the best possible times...so I have no documentation (we will have a group photo sharing session when we return to school...so I will eventually get some nice group pictures).

5. We met some really nice people! And people from all over the world!

It was a great weekend. I hope I get to go back someday to really experience the city.

What I am eating now...

Some of the things I've being munching on recently...

1. Bunny chow: a loaf of bread, hollowed out and filled with curry. This is a South African specialty. Yum.
[from Wikipedia]

2. Milo: a chocolate and malt powder that I mix with hot water and sugar. I have this for breakfast and dinner. It is like hot chocolate...but so not.[from milo.co.za]

3. Bakers Products: the best cookies ever. Blue Label, Red Label, and Eet Sum Mor. My favorite is the Red Label (Lemon Creams)

[from yardenoutlet.co.uk]

4. Nik Naks (Spicy Tomato flavor): like cheetos but with a ketchup-y flavor
[from hometesterclub.com]

more food posts to come. (I've been munching hard)

Sorry for not updating sooner. So much has happened since our trip to Mnweni. Here are a few things we have done recently.

1. We toured the Moses Mabhida soccer stadium, which was built for last year's FIFA World Cup. It is a beautiful piece of architecture. We also took the Sky Car to the top of the stadium. You can see all of Durban from up their. It is a breathtaking sight.2. Evan's host-family hooked us up with complimentary tickets to a Sharks and Blue Bulls rugby game. Though the great players from both teams are training now for the Rugby World Cup, it was exciting to see a rugby game live. I didn't follow all the rules, but everyone in the stands seemed to have a good time.
This was just a quick update. I promise to post again soon.
